There are four basic types of lotions that massage establishments may use: lotions, crème, butter and oil/gel.
Massage lotion glides on very easily to the skin and moves very well over a larger area, such as the back or upper thigh. However, the lotion dissipates very quickly, and more and more lotion has to be applied to have a smooth stroke from the therapist.
Massage butter is the opposite. It is very dense, almost like an actual “stick of butter”. Its nourishment properties are very concentrated, however only small areas can be worked as it does not glide easily.
Massage oils and gels are generally confined to one single proprietary factor, such as almond oil or grape seed oil. They contain pure extracts and almost always have a natural cooking ability associated with them such as olive oil. These extracts have wonderful healing properties for the skin and have excellent glide available for the therapist, however they will stain clothes and only contain the natural properties of its basic element rather than an infusion of other beneficial ingredients.
At Massage Therapy, we use massage crème. It has physical properties in between lotion and butter. It feels soft to the skin and holds up well to the therapists glide; whether long soft strokes or short deeper moves are used to get the tensions out. We prefer to use BIOTONE brand massage products for the general massage session. It is preferred by most massage therapist as the easiest and most reliable product to stand up to the forces that are put upon it. It retains its viscosity and is able to be infused with natural healing ingredients such as chamomile (calming), lavender (healing) as well as the essential oils of Jojoba, Sesame, Grapeseed, Apricot, Pecan, Sunflower as well as other extracts of flowers and other botanicals such as Aloe Vera and Sea Kelp to give the client the results they expect from massage: relaxation, therapeutic or both.
For our foot reflexology massage we use Himalaya’s Intensive Moisturizing FootCare Cream. The foot has the thickest and most abused layers of dermal tissue found anywhere else on the body. To combat the dryness of the skin and the eventual aching of the muscles that will ensue, we use this special all natural foot cream for the following properties:
At West Side Massage, our clients can experience slight trauma to their muscles at a moment’s notice. Ice is good, but a longer lasting cold application with additional therapeutic effects is great. That is why we use Biofreeze pain relieving gel.
Biofreeze pain relieving gel is the brand name for a topical pain relieving gel distributed by G.R Lane Health Products Ltd.
Biofreeze is a product used for relieving pain in sports injuries, arthritis, sore muscles and joints, sprains and backache. It works using cryotherapy and contains the herb Ilex, specifically the Ilex paraguariensis species.
Ilex Paraguariensis is a South American herb extracted from the holly shrub that’s traditionally used by the Paraguay Indians to enhance the effects of their medicines. It is known to have stimulating and refreshing properties that has been taken to alleviate the symptoms of headaches, migraines, and as a digestive aid.
Biofreeze’s main ingredient is menthol, a derivative of peppermint that stimulates the cold receptors of the skin. It gives the sensation of penetrating cold that sore muscles need to numb down the pain.
